Does Book Reviews Matter?
A literary criticism of a book on the basis of style, content and merit is what book reviews are all about. Reviews can be categorized into 3 types namely, scholarly reviews, summary reviews and primary source opinion. Most reviewers usually evaluate books from their personal tastes and use the occasion to promulgate their individual ideas and thoughts on the topic.
Reviews of books play an important role in determining the worth and success of a book. Getting many positive reviews have great impact but only if they come from trustworthy and impartial reviewers. Some of the main purposes of book reviews are;
- They offer feedback.
This is an important thing to an author as he or she gets to know what the readers got to like in the book as what they did not. Feedbacks can offer great ideas for the next books that the author intends to write, ensuring that he produces only good work that the readers will appreciate.
- Reviews offer some form of marketing opportunities.
Good reviews in particular can help in winning the increasingly tight competition among authors to sell. They help in getting the word out about the book, especially when the reviews are posted online on popular review sites. A good number of readers will wish to get the book simply based on the good and enticing reviews that they read.
- Material evaluation.
When reading a book, it is usually quite difficult to grasp all the information that the writer has to offer. Book reviews come in handy in trying to assist you to properly analyze and understand the contents more clearly. Points that might have been overlooked might be highlighted in the reviews.
- Reviews as a measure.
The number of reviews can also be used as a good indicator of the work’s visibility. Having more reviews means that more people have seen or read the book, and taken time to post their response to it. Reviews can therefore be used to measure on approximation basis, the number of people who get access to the book.
- Used as advertisements.
In attempts to market and promote their books, many authors devote a good amount of time and resources towards advertising. Featuring short reviews of the book in the advertisements has proved to be a successful strategy over the years. This works best if the reviews are from real and authentic readers who convince other of how good the book is and try to get them to go and buy a copy for themselves.
